When a drain keeps backing up

Record what happens between visits

Note the fixtures affected, the date of the last clearing and how long normal drainage lasted. Record whether using a washer or upstairs fixture triggers a lower drain to back up. This sequence helps a plumber choose the inspection scope without assuming the same cause every time.

Ask what the first visit established

Was the obstruction removed, moved or only temporarily relieved? Was the condition of the pipe inspected? Ask for available notes or video and an explanation of any limitations. A repeated symptom may justify additional investigation, but it does not by itself prove that a whole line needs replacement.

Compare findings with the proposed repair

Ask the contractor to identify the location and extent of the defect, the access required and why the recommended method fits. For a Portland sewer issue, consult official guidance on shared lines, ownership and permits. Have those details checked for your address before agreeing to excavation.

Agree on verification

Ask how the business will check flow after work, whether the inspection record is included and what to do if symptoms return. Keep unrelated cleanup and building restoration clearly assigned. Stop using fixtures that worsen contaminated backups and avoid further chemical treatments.

A drain-clearing assessment should distinguish immediate flow restoration from investigation. Before paying for video work, use these sewer-camera inspection questions.
